Château de Peyras

Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Château de Peyras is a private fortified manor at Roumazières-Loubert, in the Charente, above the Charente valley. The medieval archives have been lost, but renovation work has confirmed that the château existed before the 12th century.

From the 15th to the 18th century it belonged to the Feydeau de Peyras family, lords of Roumazières. Rebuilt after the Hundred Years' War, the rectangular main building with an upper floor and mansard roof dates from the 15th century. It originally had five towers; only one round tower remains, containing a chapel with eight arches. A 17th-century door opens on the west façade.

The Broin family bought the château in 1977 and restored it. The east wing and north-east tower have been registered as historic monuments since 1998. It is described as open to visitors, but no recent source could confirm current opening arrangements.
