Château de Vayres

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Château de Vayres is at Saint-Georges-lès-Baillargeaux, north of Poitiers, in the Vienne. It occupies the site of a stronghold recorded as early as 1392, of which the two towers framing the main building survive. The whole was rebuilt in the 16th century, then restored and decorated in the 17th century.

The monument has long been protected: façades and roofs registered in 1959, gardens registered in 1966, and the large dovecote dated 1656 listed in 1994. In the 1930s the château was bought by the photographer François Kollar, who lived here with his family during the Occupation.

The property now belongs to a private company, and visiting arrangements are not confirmed by recent sources.
