Château de Saissac
In the heart of the Montagne Noire, north-west of Carcassonne, the château de Saissac tiers its terraces before an exceptional landscape barred on the horizon by the Pyrenees chain. The castle appears textually in 960: it was bequeathed by the bishop of Toulouse to the count of Carcassonne who, from the eleventh century, granted it as a fief to powerful vassals. Partly in ruins from the mid-eighteenth century, the monument was gradually abandoned. It was moreover damaged by treasure hunters in 1862.
