Château de Montvillargenne
In 1900 Baroness Jeanne de Rothschild built a château at Gouvieux, in the Oise, a commune where the Rothschild family already owned the Château des Fontaines. She called on Léon-Maurice Chatenay, the family's architect, who also built the Adolphe de Rothschild ophthalmological foundation in Paris in 1902-1905. The building is eclectic in style, with neo-Norman half-timbering.
The château was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War. After the war it housed a novitiate run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart, replaced in 1969 by a school of arts and crafts. In 1985 it became a luxury hotel with 120 rooms, a restaurant and an indoor pool. Its pleasure garden, with an earth terrace and an orangery, is on the preliminary inventory of remarkable gardens.
