Château de Montrond

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

After the division of lands in 1173, the castle of Montrond, in the Loire, was built by the Counts of Forez to ensure the security of the region. Built on a basalt hill in the centre of the Forez plain, it became a particularly well-placed lookout post.

In 1302 it belonged to Arthaud de Saint-Germain, whose family took the name Apchon in the 15th century. In the Renaissance the building was transformed into a splendid château, the scene of grand celebrations and festivities.
