Château de La Roche

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Château de La Roche, at Saint-Priest-la-Roche in the Loire, is perched on a rocky islet above the river, in the Loire gorges, on the shore of Lake Villerest. It dates back to the 13th century and is regarded as the emblem of the site because of its position above the water.

The footbridge leading to it depends on the season and the water level. The château has been given a new interior layout and décor. The visit is a dramatised guided tour of about fifty minutes, set in 1900 in the home of Monsieur and Madame Roustan, in which visitors relive life at the château at that time. It is best booked online on the château's website. A tour in English is held on certain days, and a dramatised tour is also organised during the European Heritage Days.
