Château de Grangent
The castle of Grangent stands on a small island in Lake Grangent, overlooked by the Château d'Essalois, in the south of the commune of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert, in the Loire.
When it was built, around 800, the island was in fact a promontory rising some fifty metres above the river, a situation radically changed by the construction of the Grangent dam. In the Middle Ages and later it was destroyed, rebuilt and restored several times. It was registered as a historic monument on 24 October 1945, and the whole site of the tower and its surroundings on 12 March 1946. The castle is now private property.
