Château de Montreuil-Bellay
The château de Montreuil-Bellay stands in the heart of the walled town of Montreuil-Bellay, in the Maine-et-Loire, above the Thouet. The fortress goes back to the eleventh century, to the time of Fulk Nerra, count of Anjou. In the fifteenth century, it was doubled by a pleasure château. It is listed as a historic monument by order of 18 June 1979.
The guided visit lets you discover parts closed to free visitors: medieval kitchen and its great oven, canon's lodging with its stove, vaulted cellar bearing witness to the place's wine-growing past, dining room with painted beams. The wall-walk offers a view of the defensive system, with towers, barbican and turrets.
The owner family still lives in part of it. The estate produces wine sold under the château's name.
