Château de Montmirail
A listed historic monument, the 15th-century medieval castle of Montmirail stands on one of the highest points of the Sarthe, above the small town of character of Montmirail, and offers a wide panorama.
It was the scene of the attempted reconciliation arranged in 1169 by King Louis VII of France between Henry II Plantagenet, King of England, and Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. In the 18th century the Princess of Conti, daughter of Louis XIV and Mademoiselle de La Vallière, had the Renaissance-inspired façade on the park side restored and a salon and dining room furnished in Régence style, both now listed.
The visit begins with the underground armouries, continues with the 12th- and 15th-century dungeons and ends in the park, with its view over the former Perche-Gouët.
