Château de Ballon

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire

The Château de Ballon stands in the former commune of Ballon, in the Sarthe. A former fortress on the threshold of Maine, it has raised its defences on a rocky spur facing Normandy for more than a thousand years. It was a very important stronghold for much of the medieval period and the stake in many battles. Its present appearance is characteristic of the late 15th century.

The keep and the ruins have been listed as a historic monument since 1923, and the site is protected. It is surrounded by medieval and Renaissance-inspired gardens with collections of fruit trees. The visit explains the defensive role of the fortress.
