Château de Montgeoffroy

Maine-et-Loire, Pays de la Loire

The château de Montgeoffroy, at Mazé-Milon, in Anjou, was built between 1772 and 1776 for Marshal de Contades, governor of Alsace, who wanted to make it his retirement home. He entrusted the work to the Paris architect Jean-Benoît-Vincent Barré. The de Contades family has owned it since 1670.

The château came through the Revolution undamaged and has kept its archives as well as its original furniture, in Louis XV, Transition and Louis XVI styles. A large part of the furniture is stamped by great cabinetmakers, such as Gourdin, Roussel, Blanchard or Durand. This ensemble was studied by Pierre Verlet.

The visit shows the apartments, their eighteenth-century decor and the kitchens, which perpetuate the French art of living. The château is open in season and also welcomes groups.
