Château de Merville
The Château de Merville, in the Haute-Garonne, about twenty kilometres from Toulouse, is a fine example of an 18th-century residence in the Toulouse region. The Marquis Henri-Auguste de Chalvet-Rochemonteix had it built from 1743, over about fifteen years, to plans he is said to have drawn himself and that the architect Maduron carried out.
The château is built of brick, with a central block of about fifty metres and two wings forming a U. Inside, the Chinese salon is decorated with eighteen painted wooden panels of 1754 by Gilles Pin. The park is attributed to André Le Nôtre, and the garden has been labelled Jardin remarquable since 2004.
Its main attraction is a box maze with about six kilometres of hedges, open to the public since 2005. The property remains private and belongs to descendants of the Beaumont du Repaire family. The château has been registered since 1987.
