Château de la Petite Malmaison
Built in 1805 for Empress Josephine by the architect Berthault, the Petite Malmaison, in the Hauts-de-Seine, had the largest hothouse of its time, now sadly destroyed, where Josephine grew the rarest plants.
Surrounded by century-old trees, the Petite Malmaison keeps the appeal of a much-loved house and the charm of a private home. The Empress devoted herself to embellishing and decorating it, calling on renowned artists such as the marble mason Gilet and the cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter. Her watercolourist, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, known as 'the Raphael of flowers', painted his finest roses here.
