Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Amid a large mass of woods stands the Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers, in the Vienne, a former fief held from the king. From the 13th century the seigneury, then called the Motte de Bauçay, belonged to the illustrious Bauçay family. On the death of Marie de Bauçay it passed to Jean de Rochechouart, then to François de Rochechouart, who, ruined, had to give it up to his creditors in 1668. It was sold to his sister Marie de Rochechouart, then to Nicolas de Lamoignon.

Destroyed in the Revolution, the original castle was in ruins when François Hennecart bought it in 1809. He set about restoring it to its former splendour and laying out the estate. Unfortunately, only the walls remain, as it was destroyed by fire in 1932; the chapel behind the château was spared and can still be seen today.
