Donjon de Moncontour

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

A former fortress built around 1040 by Fulk Nerra, the keep of Moncontour, in the Vienne, is a treasure of the 11th century, made famous by the wars and sieges repeated here over the centuries. Bertrand du Guesclin and Geoffroy Martel wrote notable pages of French history here.

The roof, reconstructed during the restoration, and the staircase built into the thickness of the walls can be discovered. The view from the esplanade is already remarkable, and the panorama from the top is even wider. Nearby are the wash-house trail, which recalls the area's history, and a leisure park around a 10-hectare lake.
