Château de la Fontaine

Essonne, Île-de-France

The fief of La Fontaine, at Brétigny-sur-Orge in the Essonne, is only reliably recorded from the 13th century. Under the Ancien Régime it was a small estate. Boucher d'Argis, an Enlightenment figure close to the Encyclopédistes, lived here at the end of the 18th century before being guillotined in Paris during the Terror.

The property was later bought by Baron Fain, private secretary to Napoleon I and mayor of Brétigny-sur-Orge. The present château, entirely rebuilt, bears no resemblance to the earlier buildings. Today it houses a university institute of management.
