Château de La Brède

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The château de La Brède, 20 km south of Bordeaux, is an exceptional building historically, architecturally and naturally. This site, which has been visitable for about fifty years, has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1951. The castle was built from 1306 on the ruins of an older construction. Remodelled from the Renaissance, it has kept its character of fortress, atypical through its polygonal shape reflected in the water of the wide moats that surround it. The castle was reached by three drawbridges, now replaced by three wooden walkways that cross the moats animated by a ballet of carp.
