Château de Gençay
Gençay, in the Vienne, is a very old castellany of Poitou that passed to the Rancon family in the 11th century. Geoffroy IV sided with the King of France in 1241-1242, during the revolt of the lords of Aquitaine and Poitou; it served him well, as he received royal funds to rebuild his castle from scratch.
The castle played a major role in the Hundred Years' War, but the sieges it suffered were never destructive: its ruin only came in the 19th century.
