Château de Caumont
The Château de Caumont, in the Gers, was built on the remains of a fortress that belonged to Gaston Phoebus. The present building was put up between 1525 and 1535 by Pierre de Nogaret de La Valette, who had inherited the seigneury through his marriage to Marguerite de l'Isle, to plans by the Toulouse architect Nicolas Bachelier.
The largest château in the Gers, it was the birthplace of Jean-Louis de Nogaret de La Valette, future Duke of Épernon and close to Henry III, Henry IV and Louis XIII; Henry IV himself stayed here several times. A listed historic monument, it sums up nearly five centuries of Gascon history, between medieval fortress and Renaissance jewel.
