Château de Bazaneix
The Château de Bazaneix is at Saint-Fréjoux, in upper Corrèze, near Ussel. Recorded in the 14th century, it was mostly built in the 15th; its exact origins are poorly documented. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1987.
The very feudal-looking building consists of a rectangular main block flanked by round towers at the south-west and south-east corners. A third tower, on the façade, houses the staircase. Circular moats fed by running water surround it, in a park of several hectares. Partial restorations were carried out in the 19th century.
The château is private property and is reported to open for guided tours on some summer weekends; it is best to check the dates before coming.
