Château d'Athis

Essonne, Île-de-France

The Château d'Athis, in the Essonne, stands on the site of the 15th-century manor house that was the seat of the seigneury of Athis. The buildings were put up by the La Brousse family, parliamentarians who held the seigneury in the 17th century and the first half of the 18th.

In 1743 it was sold to Mademoiselle de Charolais, granddaughter of Louis XIV on her mother's side and of the Grand Condé on her father's, who made it her summer residence. She embellished the château and park: she cleared the main courtyard of the farm that had occupied it, built the two entrance pavilions, laid out the park in terraces and added cascades and fountains in the style of Le Nôtre. The château now belongs to a private school, the Lycée Saint-Charles.
