Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres
Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral is a Catholic building in the heart of the town of Chartres, in the Eure-et-Loir. A monument of Gothic architecture, it is traditionally considered one of the best-preserved cathedrals of this style through its sculptures, stained glass and paving. It was built in the early thirteenth century, mostly in thirty years, on the ruins of a Romanesque cathedral destroyed by fire in 1194.
Its vast nave, its porches with mid-twelfth-century sculptures and its set of twelfth- and thirteenth-century stained glass make it an exceptional masterpiece, inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage. It is also an ancient pilgrimage stage.
