Cascade de Syratus

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Syratu (or Syratus) waterfall is in the commune of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, in the Doubs. It flows into the Loue. With a total drop of 230 m, it is the tallest waterfall in the département.

It has three parts: at the top, an almost vertical fall of 50 m from the plateau; in the middle, a 32 m fall followed by a slide that passes under the road; at the bottom, a descent of about 100 m on a wooded slope. In this part, the water deposits limestone on moss and vegetation, forming tufa deposits, pools and caves.

The bottom of the waterfall is accessible by the GR 590 path, and the middle section can be seen from the neighbouring road. The site is fragile and its visitor numbers have risen sharply in recent years, to the point that the authorities limited vehicle access in 2022 to protect it.
