La source de la Loue et les Gorges de Nouailles

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The source of the Loue gushes from a large cave carved in an overhanging rock wall, at the foot of a vast cirque of cliffs, near Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, in the Doubs. It is a resurgence: part of the water comes from losses of the Doubs, which explains the spectacular character of the site.

It is one of the département's major natural sites, laid out and enhanced with educational panels explaining the phenomenon.

From the source, a path descends the deep Nouailles gorges, on the left bank. It leads to an old power plant, then to the village of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre. The walk crosses a landscape of limestone cliffs, forests and meadows.
