Cap d'Erquy

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

Cap d'Erquy, in the Côtes-d'Armor, overlooks the port of Erquy. Its pink sandstone cliffs reach about sixty metres in height. The site was listed in 1978, a year after its acquisition by the Côtes-d'Armor General Council, which manages public access. It covers about 170 hectares.

The history of the cape is as old as humans: two ramparts, dating from the Iron Age and perhaps the Bronze Age, closed off the promontory. The pink sandstone was then quarried, to supply paving stones sent to Paris and big towns until the 1930s. The old quarries, filled with water, now form little blue lakes discovered by an interpretation trail. The customs officers' path (GR34) lets you walk around the cape and admire the bay of Saint-Brieuc.
