Cap Camarat

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Cap Camarat forms the southern tip of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, in the commune of Ramatuelle. Its low cliffs, indented with small, discreet coves, contrast with the bustle of the better-known beaches of nearby Pampelonne bay.

Built between 1829 and 1832, the Cap Camarat lighthouse still watches over this rocky point, guiding ships along a coastline once feared for its shoals. The coastal path, laid out on former customs officers' trails, follows the shore as close to the water as possible, between umbrella pines and rocks polished by sea spray.

The hike to the cape, accessible from several points on the peninsula, is particularly suited to spring and autumn, when the heat is gentler than in midsummer. The area is also a popular starting point for walking to Cap Taillat, a little further west.
