Camon

Ariège, Occitanie

In the Middle Ages, the site was chosen by a Benedictine community to set up an abbey, which became a priory in the early eleventh century. Destroyed in 1279 by a flood, then again in 1494 by bands of routiers, the priory was abandoned. In the early sixteenth century, Philippe de Lévis, new bishop of Mirepoix, had it rebuilt and fortified. He then settled in the castle — the name given to the prior's old lodging. The place became private at the Revolution. Rebuilt at the same period, the church houses a triptych dating from the early eighteenth century and twelfth-century sculptures representing the evangelists symbolically. Along the ramparts, the Maison Haute was converted in the sixteenth century into a lord's house by a royal notary.
