Château de Lagarde

Ariège, Occitanie

The ruins of the castle of Lagarde, in the Ariège, form a rectangular enclosure (45 x 52 m) with four rectangular towers. The two-metre-thick walls are topped by supporting structures, probably for hoardings or machicolations.

It was built in the first half of the 14th century by the lords of Lévis, heirs of Guy de Lévis, who had been in dispute with the Abbey of Lagrasse over his possessions. The castle is still private property and cannot be entered without permission. Unfortunately, the major upkeep such a building would need hampers its presentation: lost among grass more than a metre high, the ruins give little idea of what it must have been like a few centuries ago.
