Château de Miglos

Ariège, Occitanie

In the heart of the Pyrenees, in the Ariège, the ruins of the castle of Miglos stand proudly on a rocky promontory. Perched at more than 750 m, the massive fortress shows its powerful keep to the Vicdessos valley when it emerges from the mist.

The castle covers 600 m². Square in plan (about 25 m a side), it stands at the north end of an elliptical rock 90 m long and 35 m wide. The seigneurial residence, on the north side, looked out over the valley and was flanked by a square tower 15 m high on the west. To the east was a large military hall with five oblique arrow slits covering the approach. To the south rose a keep more than 20 m high, without vault or staircase, used for storage, observation and as a last refuge. The walls were up to 80 cm thick, crowned with plain crenellations without machicolations, and a barbican defended the entrance on the south.
