Belcastel

Aveyron, Occitanie

Protected by the wooded slopes of the valley, the town's houses huddle at the foot of the castle following the curve of the river. The fortress was from the start of the feudal regime the property of the Belcastel family, whose influence extended on both sides of the Aveyron. It was in the sixteenth century that the family, ruined by the Wars of Religion, emigrated to Languedoc. In ruins in the nineteenth century, the recently restored castle takes in at a glance the restored village with its paved calades, the oven, the farriers' frames and the ancient fountain. The fifteenth-century church protects the tomb of its founder, Alzias de Saunhac, to whom we owe the building of the bridge with the unusual altar stone: passers-by paid for their crossing in prayers and offerings. A short distance from the village, the fortified site of the Roc d'Anglars dates from the eighth century.
