Amiens

Somme, Hauts-de-France

Amiens is organised around the Somme and its canals, whose colourful banks in the Saint-Leu quarter, the former district of tanners and dyers, are now among the most charming parts of the city, with low houses and bright façades reflected in the water.

The prefecture of the Somme and former capital of Picardy owes its fame above all to its Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the largest in France, but its historic centre is also good for strolling, between lively market halls, half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes. Jules Verne lived here for many years, and the city's fabric was shaped by post-war reconstruction around the Tour Perret. The hortillonnages, market gardens crossed by canals on the edge of the city, complete an identity inseparable from water.
