Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire

These high walls reveal to the attentive walker that the little priory, founded in the eleventh century, threatened with annihilation at the Revolution, then revived by the Benedictine Order established by Dom Guéranger in the nineteenth century, has become a great abbey, mother of many monasteries in France and beyond its borders.

Once through the medieval gate of the abbey church, you will discover the famous Saints of Solesmes, whose features and attitudes are exceptional.

You can then admire the fifteenth-century Entombment of Christ and, echoing it, the sixteenth-century "Belle Chapelle", entirely devoted to Notre-Dame.

Saint-Pierre de Solesmes abbey is also the high place of Gregorian Chant, bringing together several centuries of liturgical music history.
