tourbières de Vred

Nord, Hauts-de-France

The Vred peat bog, an inland wetland of 41 ha, is part of the alluvial system of the lower Scarpe (nearly 40,000 ha). It rests on peaty alluvium in which water circulates with great difficulty owing to the almost total absence of slope: set between 16 and 17.5 m, the site tends to form a basin relative to its immediate surroundings. Geologically, the reserve is characterised by a heterogeneous accumulation of Tertiary sands and clays resting on chalk layers.
