Tour de Broue
Built on a rocky spur overlooking the former Gulf of Saintonge and the Brouage marshes, in the Charente-Maritime, the Tour de Broue is the last remnant of an 11th-century fortified complex. The keep stands on an artificial mound rising about 80 feet above the sea and the surrounding marsh.
Only half of the tower remains today, the side that faced the coast, but it is easy to see that it was square and built of rubble, with courses of dressed stone at intervals. Five buttresses strengthened each face. The mortar used is reddish and contains pieces of charcoal.
