Tour Anne-de-Bretagne

Yvelines, Île-de-France

The castle of Montfort was built on a natural spur. The first building, raised around the year 1000, was probably of wood. Pentagonal when rebuilt in stone, the keep was heavily remodelled at the end of the fifteenth century, receiving a hexagonal stair tower serving the apartments. The castle is preceded by a bastion halfway up the slope, with pointed roofs like the rest of the fortress. To the west, a deep ditch isolates it; in the Renaissance, a multi-arched bridge linked it to the opposite side. One of its walls, threatening to collapse, was pulled down in the nineteenth century, when a public garden was created on the mound.
