Source de l'Escaut

Aisne, Hauts-de-France

Laid out by the monks of Prémontré Abbey, the source of the Scheldt (Escaut) lies in a remote spot north of Saint-Quentin, in the Aisne. At the spring stands a sculpture of a dolphin, a gift from the city of Antwerp in gratitude to the river that made its fortune.

For many Belgians this modest grove outside Gouy is an emblematic place, as it gives birth to the famous 430-kilometre river that flows into the North Sea.
