Rocher de Castel-Vandon

Manche, Normandie

The Castel Vendon is a rocky promontory overlooking the sea near the hamlet of Gruchy, in the commune of Gréville-Hague, in the Manche. It is here that the painter Jean-François Millet (1814–1875), born very close by, made between 1840 and 1844 his first landscape work, "Le Rocher du Castel", now kept at the Thomas-Henry museum in Cherbourg. The site also has remarkable geological interest: its Icart rocks, about 2.1 billion years old, are among the oldest in Western Europe. The customs officers' path lets you follow the coast to the foot of the rock.
