Réserve zoologique de Sauvage

Yvelines, Île-de-France

The Sauvage zoological reserve is in the French commune of Émancé in the Yvelines département, about twelve kilometres south-west of Rambouillet. It lies in the 36 hectares of the park of the château de Sauvage, which was acquired in 1973 by the "International Wildlife Preservation Fund" (IWPF) under the leadership of René Jamous. It is above all an ornithological reserve since more than three-quarters of the fauna is made up of birds, the most noticed being the flamingos on a pond in front of the château, the peacocks and the pelicans. Apart from the exotic birds kept in aviaries, most of the animals are free and you may come across red-necked wallabies, blackbuck antelopes, emus, axis deer or swamp wallabies… This zoological reserve does not prevent the flora from having its say here, especially since the storms of December 1999. Alongside the classic regional flora, sequoias, Atlas cedars and Greek pines have been planted.
