Plage de la Conche des Baleines

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

La Conche des Baleines is a large sand beach on the Île de Ré, in the Charente-Maritime, at the western tip of the island, near the Baleines lighthouse. Exposed to Atlantic waves, it offers long stretches of sand at low tide, dunes and an open landscape, very different from the sheltered beaches of the island's north coast.

Swimming there requires caution because of the current and swell, and the beach is mostly appreciated for walking, sand yachting and sunsets. You can combine it with the climb to the Baleines lighthouse and discovering the island by bicycle, on its many cycle tracks.
