Phare des Baleines
The Baleines lighthouse is at the western tip of the Île de Ré (Charente-Maritime), in the commune of Saint-Clément-des-Baleines. The lighthouse owes its name to the fact that a relatively high number of whales came to be stranded at this spot on the Île de Ré in the past. It succeeds the old Baleines lighthouse built by Vauban. The old Baleines lighthouse was listed as a historic monument by order of 22 June 1904. All the buildings of the Baleines lighthouse and its park with the enclosure wall were listed as historic monuments by order of 23 October 2012.
