Palais des rois de Majorque

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie

The Palace of the Kings of Majorca in Perpignan, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, was born of the wish of James II for a residence in his mainland capital. From 1276 the Kingdom of Majorca was formed from part of the Kingdom of Aragon, taking in the Balearic Islands, the city of Montpellier, Roussillon and the Cerdagne.

The castle was begun before 1274, two years before the death of James I, which officially marked the separation of the two kingdoms; James I had thus made his intention of dividing his kingdom known well in advance. Construction lasted 35 years, ending with the consecration of the chapels in 1309.
