Château de Castelnou

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie

The Château de Castelnou, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, was founded in 988 and marks the beginning of feudalism in Northern Catalonia, following the Spanish March. A witness to the Catalan past, it remains essentially the most archaic example of a medieval fortress preserved in the Roussillon.

The castle now houses permanent exhibitions of armour, medieval costume and bows and crossbows. Room after room, reconstructions recall scenes of feudal life. Several exhibitions of patchwork and sculpture complete the visit, together with a Mediterranean park featuring some sixty plant species.
