Muséum de Besançon - Le Jardin zoologique

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

What makes the Besançon Muséum's new zoo original, compared with more conventional zoos, is its accompanying museum display. It is a true open-air exhibition including not only the living collections but also their explanation, through panels, display cases and sculptures.

The Muséum takes part in several European breeding programmes (EEP) to save endangered species, such as the Siberian tiger, gibbons, ruffed lemurs and macaws. These areas present mostly exotic wild fauna, with about 70 species and 400 animals. A children's area, 'La P'tite Ferme', both playful and educational, allows direct contact with small domestic animals.
