Musée d'Archéologie Nationale

Yvelines, Île-de-France

The Museum of National Antiquities, renamed the National Archaeology Museum in 2005, is devoted to the archaeology of France. It is housed in the château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Yvelines), restored by Eugène Millet, a pupil of Viollet-le-Duc. The museum presents about 30,000 archaeological objects, making it one of the richest collections in Europe. They are arranged in seven chronological collections: the Palaeolithic, the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, Roman Gaul and Merovingian Gaul (eighth century), complemented by a room of comparative archaeology. Its storerooms hold more than two million objects.
