Château de Madame du Barry
Built in 1700, this house at Louveciennes, in the Yvelines, was granted by Louis XIV to Arnold de Ville, governor of the Machine de Marly. Restored in 1769 by the architect Gabriel and the cabinetmakers Guibert and Rousseau for the Countess du Barry, it remained hers until 1793.
The du Barry period marked an important moment in art history, with paintings from Greuze to Vernet, sculptures, tableware and furniture. From 1818 to 1846 the banker Pierre Laffitte restored the château. Under the Second Empire, the English financier Bowes and his wife, Mademoiselle Delorme, an actress and painter, gave grand receptions here.
