Musée archéologique du Val-d'Oise

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France

The Val-d'Oise departmental archaeological museum, at Guiry-en-Vexin, opened in 1983 and has held the 'Musée de France' label since 2004. It presents many objects from excavations in the Val-d'Oise, including 35,000 items (coins, pottery, sculpture) from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. It has the largest collection of Merovingian stelae in France, and two rooms are devoted to the Gallo-Roman site of Genainville (Les Vaux de la Celle).

The collections follow a chronological route from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Contemporary archaeology is represented by a room presenting the Soviet statues discovered in 2004 at Baillet-en-France, which originally decorated the entrance to the USSR pavilion at the 1937 Paris World Fair.
