Lac de Roselend
The Lac de Roselend lies in the commune of Beaufort, in the Beaufortain, between the Col du Pré and the Cormet de Roselend, near the Arêches-Beaufort resort. The surrounding mountains rise to nearly 2,800 metres. It is held back by the Roselend dam, considered the most "elegant" in Savoie, which required 940,000 cubic metres of concrete.
Work began in 1955 and the flooding, in 1960, submerged the mountain pasture village of Roselend, which gave the lake its name. The compensation paid by EDF indirectly made possible the founding of the Beaufort cheese cooperative. A new Roselend chapel was built near the dam when work ended in 1962. The Cormet de Roselend road, which runs along the lake, offers wide views over its waters and the Beaufortain peaks.
