La Caverne du Dragon

Aisne, Hauts-de-France

As you enter the Caverne du Dragon, you may hear the chisels of the stonemasons who built the cathedrals, the hooves of the horses drawing the carriage of Louis XV's daughters along the Chemin des Dames, or the cries of soldiers caught under machine-gun fire, taking refuge in this underground fortress used by French and German soldiers during the First World War.

The Caverne du Dragon lies on the Chemin des Dames, in the commune of Oulches-la-Vallée-Foulon, in the Aisne. It was a strategic site in the First World War, during the Nivelle offensive and the battle of the observatories. It was the Germans who, while occupying the cave, nicknamed it the 'Dragon's Cave'.
