Jardin botanique de Bordeaux

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Bordeaux botanical garden is in the Bastide district, on the right bank of the Garonne, along Allée Jean Giono. Opened in 2003, it took over from a botanical garden whose history goes back to the seventeenth century and which had been transferred in 1855 to the Jardin Public, where part of the collections remains today.

The Bastide garden covers about four hectares. It is organised in several sections: an arboretum, cereal fields, an avenue of vines, a water garden and greenhouses. You also discover eleven landscapes that recreate Aquitaine habitats, such as dunes, cliffs, heaths and marshes.

The garden has a scientific and educational purpose: it lets people discover biodiversity and the sustainable management of natural resources, and conserves a regional botanical heritage. It is a calm walking space on the riverbank, facing the historic centre of the city.
