Grottes de Gargas
A few kilometres from the basilica of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, in the commune of Aventignan (Hautes-Pyrénées), the Gargas cave is known worldwide for its walls decorated with enigmatic hand paintings from the Upper Palaeolithic. Nearly 250 hands of children and adults, several with missing fingers, sit alongside engraved and line-painted animal figures. Studied from the early twentieth century, notably by the Toulouse prehistorian Félix Régnault, it remains one of the main decorated sanctuaries of the Pyrenees and is visited on a guided tour.
